juliana from the NETHERLANDS
Juliana was born in Baarn in 1909. She was educated at home. This happened in a small class with children of prominent parents. Later she received private lessons at home. She was also the first of the royal family to go to university. However, she did not receive a diploma. This was because she had followed private lessons and had not completed any formal education. After a long search of 7 years for a marriage partner, she married Bernhard van Lippe Biesterfield in 1937. During the second war she stayed in England and a part in Canada. During her reign, she played a role in becoming independent from various overseas territories. After the second war, the death penalty was again introduced in the Netherlands. Juliana was a fierce opponent of the death penalty and refused to sign the death penalty and abolished it in 1952. Wilhelmina died in 2004 and was the longest living of the Royal family.
