Charles I from Portugal
Charles I was born in 1863. In 1889 he became king of Portugal. This was not the best time to become king in Portugal. Portugal had lost many of its overseas territories due to the interference of other great powers. Apart from the fact that the income decreased as a result, the population felt humiliated. The king's behavior did not contribute to this. He lived a luxurious life and spent a lot of money. Portugal was in an economic crisis. The support of the left parties rose and the king tried to restore order with a hard hand. As always this was counterproductive. In 1908 an attack was committed on the king's carriage and he died. His wife Amalia Marie survived the attack. Their son succeeded the king.
